In March we are pleased to invite you for the exhibition "Works and days" by Tokyo based artist Chihiro Gompei. Her textile and mixed media objects by investigating ancient Greek mythology and stories, open up questions connected with identity and belonging. In her ONA project room exhibition, the artist is going to use concepts and symbols associated with the Pandora figure, and its contemporary impact into everyday life.
Artist statement:
In daily conversations, sometimes I notice that my words retrieve historical matters that I have not experienced firsthand. It feels like I repeat a story that I have never heard of.
In Hesiod’s Works and Days, there is a first mortal woman called Pandora. She is the origin of ‘Pandora’s box’ and considered as an archetype of Eva in a biblical canon. People have dictated the image of Pandora as a woman bringing evils to humans. Pandora, however, was the name of a mother goddess worshipped in Mediterranean islands before Ancient Greek occupation.
When I use Pandora’s box metaphor, it raises up the history of femme fatale from 700 BC instead of the antient goddess. Like practicing daily tasks, people have repeated a story manipulated by Hesiod and produced various images tirelessly. Pandora was sealed in the accumulation of them. I am looking for her through my works and days.
ONA project room 3月の展示プログラムは、東京を拠点に活動するアーティスト・権瓶千尋の個展「Works and days」を開催いたします。彼女の古代ギリシャ神話や物語をモチーフにしたテキスタイルや陶器の作品は、アイデンティティや帰属意識にまつわる疑問を投げかけています。
今回ONA project roomでの展示では、古代ギリシャ神話に登場する「パンドラ」像に関連する概念やシンボル、そして私たちの日常生活への現代的な影響をテーマにした作品を発表する予定しています。
暮らしのなかで、何気なく発した言葉が、自分の立ち会っていない歴史的な何かを立ち昇らせることがある。知らないはずの物語を復唱しているような、おかしな感覚だ。
古代ギリシャの詩人ヘシオドスが書いた『仕事と日々』のなかには、人類最初の女として「パンドラ」が登場する。「パンドラの箱」の語源である彼女は、ユダヤ教とキリスト教の正典に登場するイヴの原型と言われており、人類に厄災をもたらす存在として語り継がれてきた。しかし、元来、パンドラは、古代ギリシャによる侵略が始まる以前に、地中海で祀られていた地母神の呼び名だったという。
「パンドラの箱」の比喩を使うとき、そこに立ち昇るのは紀元前７００年から続くファム・ファタルの歴史であって、地母神の姿ではない。毎日の仕事の動作を繰り返すように、ヘシオドスが書き換えた物語は何度も復唱され、数々のイメージの集積のなかに、パンドラは隠蔽された。日々の制作を通して、わたしはパンドラを探している。

Chihiro Gompei
Reflecting her experience of moving back and forth between Tokyo and other cities in her 20s, Chihiro Gompei investigates an ephemeral boundary between self/here and other/there. She creates sculptures, textiles and moving images investigating identity and a sense of belonging in our time. She was a finalist of the 22nd 1_WALL photography competition (Guardian Garden, Tokyo, 2020). She received a MA in Mixed Media Textiles from Royal College of Art, London in 2016. Chihiro Gompei lives and works in Tokyo.

権瓶千尋
２０代の頃に国内外へ移住を繰り返した経験から、自己と他者をわけるものに興味をもち、現代におけるアイデンティティと所属・帰属の感覚を模索している。おもにオブジェ、テキスタイル、映像を制作。第22回写真「1_WALL」展（2020年ガーディアン・ガーデン、東京）ファイナリスト。2016年ロイヤルカレッジオブアート・ミクストメディア・テキスタイルズ修士課程修了。東京を拠点に活動している。
