ONA project room is thrilled to announce its first exhibition of 2022 „℃“ in collaboration with Rio Usui - artist and curator selected through our Open Call.
Rio's practice is based on the essence of philosophical and physical theories, as well as abstract concepts hidden in everyday life. She researches the universe and its thoughtful "existence" as both an artist and a curator.
For the exhibition at ONA project room, Rio is going to collaborate with Team M2 challenge (JAXA) - student group from JAXA's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, working on a micro robot for Mars exploration. Together they aim to transcend the boundaries between the fields of technology, science, art and its expression.
"The planet Mars is becoming one of the astronomical objects that humans may set foot on in the near future. We, the earthlings will land on it and experience it through our own existence. It can happen not only physically, but also in our senses and thoughts.
Four billion years ago there was an ocean on Mars. Over a vast amount of time and environmental changes, the water turned into ice and now is expected to be buried under the ground. The mission of the M2 challenge (JAXA) is to collect samples of this ice and bring them back to Earth.
In the exhibition " °C ", the conceptual installation of Mars in a state of flux from ancient times to the present, the micro Mars rover collecting ice samples, all this will allow the viewers who step into the installation to experience the timeless coexistence of Mars through the expression of science, technology and art."

ONAプロジェクトルームでは、公募で選ばれたアーティスト、キュレーターのRio Usuiのアートプロジェクト“ ℃ ”を2022年最初の展覧会として開催いたします。
Rio Usui は、哲学や物理学の理論のエッセンスや、日常に潜む抽象的な概念をベースにした作品を制作しています。アーティストとして、またキュレーターとして、宇宙とその思考的な「存在」を研究しています。
今回のONAプロジェクトルームでの展示では、火星探査用超小型ロボットの製作と惑星の探査に取り組むJAXA宇宙科学研究所の学生グループM2 challengeと共同で技術科学、芸術とその表現の境界を越えることを目指します。
火星という惑星は今や近い将来、人間が足を踏み入れる可能性のある天体の
一つになりつつあります。
その地上に私たち地球人類は降り立ち、自分たちの存在を通して体験します。
それは物理的だけではなく、感覚や思考の中でも起こりうるのです。

40 億年前の火星には海が広がっていました。膨大な時間と環境変化の中で水は氷になり現在では地中に埋まっていると予想されています。この氷をサンプルとて採取し、地球に持って帰ってくることが M2challenge の検討しているミッションです。

About the artist:
Rio Usui (born 1997 in Tokyo, lives and works in Weimar, Germany). Since 2017 she is enrolled in Fine Arts (Diploma), Faculty of Art and Design at Bauhaus-University Weimar.
Rio is interested in the fusion of science and technology with contemporary art and new forms of expression. Philosophical concepts are the main starting point of her practice. Her mediums include painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, sound installation, video and other digital art.
By changing the ways of working for each series she aims to expand further her own fields of consideration. Furthermore, as a curator she draws inspiration from her own artistic practice, interests and concepts to create various exhibition programs often collaborating with other artists or collectives.
Since 2019, she is involved in projects as a member of NOVA Art Space and student curatorial team marke.6 at Bauhaus University Weimar.

M2 challenge is a Group of JAXA ISAS students who are investigating a new space exploration mission using micro-robots.
They propose a new exploration method using a small rover with the group of ISAS, Usui Laboratory (Solid Planet Group), Kubota Laboratory (Space Exploration Robotics), and various other community members.
The mission we are considering is to return samples of ice from the subsurface of Mars by small rovers. Detailed investigation of subsurface ice on Mars is important to understand the past water cycles and to know if there was (is) life there. It is also important to investigate the usefulness of water as a resource for manned exploration.
Rio Usui（アーティスト・キュレーター）
1997年東京生まれ、ドイツ・ワイマール在住 2017年よりバウハウス・ワイマール大学芸術・デザイン学部芸術科（ディプロマ）在学中。
Rio Usuiは、日常生活の中に潜む抽象的な概念哲学や物理学の理論のエッセンスをベースに作品を制作している。科学技術と現代美術の融合やその新しい表現、異分野間の交流に興味を持って活動している。
表現方法は、絵画、ドローイング、彫刻、インスタレーション、パフォーマンス、サウンドインスタレーション、ビデオなどのデジタルアート、そして他のアーティストとのコラボレーションなど多岐にわたる。シリーズごとに表現媒体を変えることで、自身の考察の幅をさらに広げている。また、キュレーターとしても、アーティストとしての自身の興味やコンセプトもとに、展覧会プロジェクトを展開している。
2019年より、Rio UsuiはNOVA Art Spaceや学生キュレーターチームmarke.6(バウハウス・ワイマール大学)のメンバーとして様々なプロジェクトに参加し、キュレーションという分野でも活動している。

M2 challenge - JAXA宇宙科学研究所所属の学生が主体として活動しているグループで、超小型ロボットを用いた新しい宇宙探査ミッションを検討しています。宇宙科学研究所、臼井研究室(固体惑星グループ)と久保田研究室（宇宙探査ロボティクス）と，その他様々なコミュニティの方々と小型ローバーを使った新しい探査方法を提案します。
検討しているミッションは、小型ローバーによって、火星の地下の氷をサンプルリターンしようというものです。火星の地下氷を詳細に調査することは、火星における過去の水循環の理解につながり、火星に生命がいた(いる)のかを知る上で重要です。また、有人探査における、水の資源としての有用性を調べるためにも重要となってきます。
