ONA project room is excited to announce its collaboration with Tokyo based, Brazilian artist Anais-karenin and Sumida Art Expo 2021.
「(un)visual latency」 is an invitation to open our ears and all our senses to listen to the plant’s world. Not only through vegetal perspective but beyond it, perceiving symbiotic* and coexistent relations that plants establish with others, learning with them the art of existing-with, not just as an individual. Here, the invisible lines of these connections appear in a sensitive way, opening a deep layer to perceive the plant’s ancestral technologies of multi-existence. By extracting the color of the plant, their immanence is revealed through the perspective of animism, understood by the artist as an expression of plants intuition. The herbs here are all used in folk indigenous medicine, and were selected by the manifestation of their souls to the artist, which represents Anaiskarenin’s long trajectory of learning how to talk with the plants, doing remedies based on her ancestral knowledge. This, combined with science, shows us that the color green in plants evolved from ancestral blue seaweeds, becoming a symbiosis between plants and chloroplast*, which portrays the connections between plants, soil and deep sea. These extracted colours were transformed into a sound made in collaboration with Tatsuro Murakami. Representing a plant voicing, the notes was not decided by the artists, but using the color code of the plants mixed with mineral codes. By putting mineral and vegetal together, the exhibition portrays interdependency relations. The exhibition shows us the reverence to the plants and all elements connected with them through the soil, through their historical evolution, their souls and mythology. Mixing science, folk knowledge and speculative imagination with no hierarchy, “(un)visual latency” invites us to perceive the plants beyond categories, connecting with the visible and invisible.
*symbiosis is a long-term association between two organisms of different species.
*chloroplast is an organelle of plant’s cells and other photosynthesizing organisms, such as algae and some protists. It has chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for its green color.

For this special project, we leave UNTITLED Space to show the beautiful work of Anais-karenin at URADANA Gallery. The project is part of Sumida Art Expo 2021, an art event that takes place in October in the Sumida area.

About the artist:
Anais-karenin is a Brazilian artist and researcher. Creating mainly sculptures, installations, videos and sound, she works from speculations around non-existence of the dual nature, by proposing a symbiotic vision between organic and artificial actions and materials, invoking animism and coexistence. During 8 years she made cross-cultural studies about herbs from folk knowledge. She studied visual arts and is currently holding a Phd in Visual Poetics by São Paulo University (Brazil) and running a Visiting Research at Waseda University (Japan).
